about

This song started as a musical idea for an old-timey rockabilly tune with a chord progression I liked, which I may have stolen from somewhere, I'm not sure. It may have been influenced by a trip to New Orleans. (For those who are curious it's E G# A F# B E). The lyrics are a mix of different situations one might encounter where one may just have to accept their fate and move on rather than dwell on the past. The first verse, if I remember correctly, is a true story which occurred on vacation in Myrtle Beach as a kid, when my dad was stopped by a cop for speeding and told that he could pay him off in cash or spend the rest of the day and possibly longer in court dealing with it. The rest just continued the theme. As soon as we started arranging it, old-timey trumpet came to mind, and Craig Pedersen (Mike Essoudry’s Mash Potato Mashers, Andrea Simms-Karp, Lisa Poushinsky) was recruited to give the track the final old-timey/rag-timey/New Orleans feel it needed. This was one of the last songs we worked out for the album. Having only rehearsed it a few times before going into the studio, I think it turned out pretty well.

lyrics

In South Carolina, Nothing could be finer
Than lying on the beach, in that fine summer sun
When you got somewhere to go,
Keep an eye on the road
Those coppers make you pay for your fun

So you got yourself a ticket,
And the cop says you can pick it
See y’all in court, or pay me in cash, right now!
Don't hesitate too long,
Or the chance will be gone
Put it in the past, cuz that is that

(Yeah) That is that // That is that
Sometimes you cut your losses and you scat
Pay that man his dough
And then he'll let you go
No questions asked, that is that

INTRO

When you're hangin' with your girl, And you're in another world
Sometimes you lose sight, of what is real
Things start to get hazy, So if she starts to get crazy
Cut your losses, and say that is that

(Yeah) That is that / That is that
Sometimes you cut your losses and you scat
Tell that girl goodbye
She'll find another guy
Don't stick around to chat, that is that

INTRO/SOLO verse pattern

When you're sitting at the bar, Thinking you'll go far
One more beer, one more whiskey, one more gin, it ain't no sin
Sometimes you gotta breathe, Give your liver a reprieve
So pay your tab and scat, say that is that

Yeah that is that / That is that
That's right, now you got it down pat
Make your way back home
Spend the night alone
And tomorrow you can roam, that is that (2x)

Cut your losses and you scat
Live to fight another day, Man that’s all I got to say, It’ll happen til your grey, That is That
